Ex-Illinois SOS worker sentenced for fraud | WTAX 93 5FM/1240AM

(AP) A former administrator with the Illinois Secretary of State’s office has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for defrauding the state out of nearly $350,000. 58 year-old Candace Wanzo of Centralia was sentenced last week in federal court in Springfield to 18 months each on two counts of theft and one count of fraud. The sentences will be served concurrently. Wanzo stole sales tax payments while overseeing the public service center at the Howlett Building in Springfield, where vehicle owners can pay title and registration fees, apply and pay for license plates and make sales tax payments for vehicles.

Centralia Woman Sentenced for Defrauding the State of Illinois

A former administrator for the Illinois Secretary of State has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for fraud.     58-year-old Candace Wanzo of Centralia worked for the Department of Vehicle Services and was responsible for operation of the Public Service Center in Springfield.   She pleaded guilty last fall to stealing title and registration fees and sales tax payments – and replacing the funds with money paid by other vehicle owners.   Federal prosecutors say she misapplied 300-thousand dollars.     Wanzo has also been ordered to pay restitution. Before being hired by Jesse White’s office in 1999,  Wanzo pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly a quarter of a million dollars from Southern Illinois University while working for the bursar’s office.
